Going GG

I went for my last karaoke session with my co-workers today. I have always liked singing since I was a kid. Unfortunately, I am not born with a useful vocal range – I try my best. During this session, I was introduced to Lady Gaga by a colleague of mine. All I can say is that I like her style. She’d be known as Lady Gila/Geli in Malaysia, but I like it!

Next, I got introduced to this girl-band from Korea – Girls’ Generation. Thank god for whomever invented hawt pants. Their songs are just so-so and their voices are obviously synthed but those legs! Browsing around youtube, I get the sense that their main assets are their hind limbs. I hope that the cameraman did not hurt his back while shooting the videos.

Je veux ton amour indeed!

New Chapter

I am so excited!

I have just turned the page on an old chapter of my life and am starting down the next chapter. I have just tendered my resignation at 5.25pm today. I am officially serving my notice and will be looking forward to moving onto the next exciting chapter of my life next.

There are several reasons that have guided me towards this place in life. In fact, a lot of odd pieces seem to have fallen into place over the last few months of my life, which resulted in me taking this leap of faith and to just bloody go where no man has gone before, so to speak.

I am absolutely buzzing now. I was smiling broadly while writing my resignation letter and signing it.

Yeay!

PS: Wish me luck, as I go onto the most adventurous part of my life.

Aspiring Apotheosis

I have been reading “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown. I got it cheap and since I kinda liked the previous two Robert Langdon books, I thought to myself – wth. While reading it, I learned a new word – apotheosis.

According to Google, it is defined as “deification: the elevation of a person (as to the status of a god)”.

However, what interests me is that it has another definition: “ideal: model of excellence or perfection of a kind; one having no equal”. This is interesting as it can apply to the work that I do – in pursuit of the ideal design/architecture – and ideal is quantifiable with some physical measure or other.

So, while “engineering elegance” is my tagline, “aspiring apotheosis” will be the design goal!

Castle is Awesome!

I was introduced to this series by a colleague of mine recently. I have not had as much fun watching a series as this, for a long time. The last series that made me laugh so much was Firefly, which has the same lead actor, incidentally. Nikki Heat is pretty hawt too!

PS: They even have his books on Amazon – nice gimmick!

Deathly Hallows

I watched Part 1 of the Deathly Hallows last weekend, the last installment in the Harry Potter series. Boy was I disappointed. Not that I was a fan of Harry to begin with (I am partial towards Emma Watson), but the last installment was way below expectations.

First, the acting was not up to snuff. One would imagine that since the kids have had so much more acting experience since the first film, they would have learned to act better. However, it was not only an emotionless affair (they had to rely on an animated character – Dobby – for that), it was down-right condescending since the kids seemed to just be having fun.

Next, the imagery was ripped. While the previous installments have been accused of ripping off plot-lines from other books, this one is straight-up day-light robbery. You can tell that much of the imagery conjured up in the film is a tribute towards LOTR and several SciFi films. Some say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but unfortunately, they did not enjoy the beautiful scenery of New Zealand.

Finally, the one-liners in the film. Some of them were just too familiar – seemed like I heard them in some other film. I could actually speak out the lines before the actors on screen.

That said, fans of the franchise will still go see the film. People with nothing to do, will still go see the film. Everyone else will still go see the film. I have no doubt that it will be a box-office hit.

What can I say.

PS: My niece and nephews must’ve liked it though, since they stayed awake throughout the film! It must appeal to a different demographic.

Malaysia at WRO 2010

Yeay!

Malaysia emerged the overall champions at the World Robotics Olympiad, again, this year! From the official results we managed to win 2 golds and 3 silvers across the six categories in competition. The hosts, Philippines, managed to bag 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Malaysia also managed to win the bid to host the World Robot Olympiad in 2012!

The reason that I am so excited about this is because I played a role in helping out the organisers. I was one of the judges for the zone and national level competitions. I am also going to be involved in the WRO 2012 for sure. If I have enough resources, I will also get my company to provide technical support and help.

During this year’s competition, I was particularly impressed with the cute robot from SJKC Jalan Davidson (located close to the soon-to-be 100-storey eye-sore). The students made a LEGO robot that makes muruku and pulls a cup of teh tarik quite splendidly. I was quite impressed and hope that the students will go on to become engineers in the future!

Me, receiving a token of appreciation on behalf of all the judges.

I am always supportive of out-reach programmes like this, that try to inculcate a love for engineering in our children. Engineers build the foundation that a society stands on towards progress. It is always important to have plenty of good engineers in the country.

Yeay!

MammoSEL Programme

I saw a brochure today, advertising a free mammogram service provided by the Selangor government for women above 25. I turned to the back of the brochure to look for the contact details and found that it was provided by a certain “Forrest Medical Group” in Malaysia. This got me curious as I was wondering who were these people, the Forest Medical Group.

Obviously, I am not privy to the big picture here but I am quite concerned at the fact that the group’s Executive Director, Beh Jiun Jye, was the DAPSY International Affairs Bureau Secretary in 2003. This raises some red-flags in my mind. I am just wondering how this medical group got involved in this project and if it went through the proper transparent procedures.

Somehow, I have this sinking feeling that this would not be the case here.

PS: Maybe someone more connected than me can do the sleuthing and find out what are the specifics of the deal and programme.

Update@2010-11-23: Not that I am suggesting that there is any impropriety afoot, but Beh Jiun Jye is currently in the running for a position in DAP Selangor this weekend. It just does not look good on Pakatan if they do things like the BN – regardless of the merits of the programme. I just hope that they did not.

Update@2010-11-25: Was alerted by a reader. Seems like the BFM page is down after being up for almost 2 years. Not sure why. Anyway, the google cache is still up tho.
