I found our New Year's celebration and fireworks display at Merdeka Square a little sad. Thankfully I was not there in person as I could watch the other celebrations on TV. When the stroke of midnight struck in Malaysia and the fireworks went off, I was taken aback by the odd camera angle of the live broadcast of Ambang 2009.
The cameraman was actually standing in Merdeka Square and ...

According to a recent article from TheStar, we Malaysians suffer from a 'mega sale' culture. There is plenty of evidence to support this, especially in KL. As evidenced by this photo that I took on Christmas eve at MidValley, the shopping malls are thronging with shoppers and practically every car park bay is full. When I got to Zone A, the counter outside was only showing 10 lots ...

The most significant thing that happened to me today was being addressed as 'uncle' by some girl who worked at the local Carrefour. I was in the store shopping for some daily provisions. I paid for my purchases at the cashier counter and the girl who worked there asked me, "uncle, do you want the 5 sen back?". Uncle??!! I didn't know that I looked old enough to ...

A rather odd thing happened to me recently. One day, while checking my email, I came across an email from an old friend - someone whom I've not seen or heard from in more than 16 years. It was a rather strange sensation, being contacted by someone from my distant past. However, it was also a very curious and interesting experience too!
Anyway, my friend, Angeline had recently ...

According to this article in TheStar, "The Regent of Negri Sembilan, Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja’afar, has called on royal immunity to be reinstated so the constitutional monarchy can be restored to its full sovereignty. He said that if the Ruler were to exercise his duties in a fair, just and impartial manner to protect the Federal Constitution, his sovereignty needed to be protected too."
I think that this is ...

See, like I mentioned in an earlier entry, our Royal Malaysian Police Force is a very compassionate police force. I doubt that you will be able to find another police force like ours in this world. According to this article in TheStar today, a 19 year old involved in a car-chase, tried to run down a policeman, got shot at by the police, got caught with drugs, is ...

Malaysia is actually blessed with one of the most compassionate police forces in the world. While some may deride them as polis raja di Malaysia, they are actually quite fun to deal with in certain situations. Unfortunately, I did not read this article in TheStar until much later but it still does not change some of the examples of their compassion that I wish to highlight here.
Our police ...

I was just wondering about this issue recently. The civil service employs about 2 million people and while I do not have the exact numbers, I have a feeling that there are a significant number of pensioners as well. Unlike the private sector, civil servants are given a lifelong pension. Even after their death, this pension can be collected by their spouse or any child under the age ...
